Types of Microphones

Dynamic Microphones

Shure SM58
  • Dynamic microphones can withstand high sound pressure level (SPL).
  • It requires no extra power to use it such as phantom power.
  • Dynamic microphones has a tailored frequency response.
  • Dynamic microphones has a narrow frequency response.
  • These features made dynamic microphones a ideal microphone to use for live performances.

Condenser Microphones

Neumann U87
  • Condenser microphones have a higher sensitivity which has a better signal to noise ratio.
  • Condenser microphones have a flat frequency respons.
  • However, condenser microphones are more fragile.
  • Condenser microphone require phantom power to put in use.
  • Condenser microphones are good for distant micing such as room mics.
  • Since it has a flatter frequency response and higher sensitivity, it is good for recording solo instuments such as acoustic guitars. Also it is good for recording quiet instruments, and also vocals.

Ribbon Microphones

Coles 4038
  • Ribbon microphones have a flat frequency response.
  • Ribbon microphone provides a smotthier detail for recordings.
  • However, ribbon microphones are fragile, phantom power may damage the microphone therefore, it does not require phantom power.
  • It has a lower sensitivity than condenser microphones.
  • Due to its features, it is great for using it as overheads.

Tube Microphones

Telefunken U47
  • Tube microphones are valve eletronic.
